Windows 7 is compatible with most models and devices, but we strongly recommend that you do a quick check first. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is a tool provided by microsoft. It scans your PC to see if it’s ready for Windows 7, and tells you any known compatibility issues.

If you are upgrading from a pre-release installation of Windows 7 such as the Beta or RC versions, you will need to use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings to a new installation of Windows 7 or restore your Windows Vista® backup before upgrading.

You can install Windows 7 as an upgrade to an existing installation of Windows Vista® with Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 using the Upgrade option during installation. To maintain settings when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows® XP, you must migrate files and settings using a tool such as Windows 7 Easy Transfer and then reinstall your software programs. (Windows Easy Transfer (Migwiz.exe) is installed with Windows 7 and is available on the Windows 7 DVD in the Support\Migwiz directory.) Additionally, if you are installing Windows 7 on a new computer, you can transfer settings and files from any other computer running Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Before installing any operating system, check that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements for the version of the operating system you want to install. You should also back up your data files, or save them to a safe location, before upgrading.

You can upgrade from Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 to Windows 7 using the Windows 7 DVD. Upgrading is supported from Windows Vista to the same edition of Windows 7. To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must right-click Setup.exe to run the procedure as administrator. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure.

Microsoft is offering a free tool designed to streamline the creation of bootable Windows 7 RTM DVDs or USBs. Appropriately dubbed the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, the utility is available for download via the Microsoft Store at no cost. Customers that acquire a Windows 7 license online and download the RTM bits of the operating system themselves opting to get the platform packaged as an ISO file need to either create a bootable DVD or a bootable USB device in order to install the OS.

This is where the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool comes into play. With the utility, Windows 7 ISO file copies can be created on either a USB flash drive or a DVD. The tool will guide end users through the necessary steps, after which they will be able to install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or the DVD media

“The copy of the ISO file that the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool creates is bootable. Bootable media allows you to install Windows 7 without having to first run an existing operating system on your machine. If you change the boot order of drives in your computer’s BIOS, you can run the Windows 7 installation directly from your USB flash drive or DVD when you turn on your computer,” Microsoft noted.

Obviously, users can turn to any DVD-burning solution in order to create a bootable DVD of Windows 7. But the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, although also supporting DVD scenarios, was in fact meant to help end users create bootable USBs. More and more portable computers, especially netbooks, come without a DVD drive, making it difficult for users to install a new operating system. Bootable Windows 7 USB flash devices can also be created manually, but the free tool offered by Microsoft simplifies the process as much as possible.

The Upgrade option is not available in Windows 7 Setup when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP. However, you can use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer. To do this, you must first copy files to a removable media, such as an external hard drive or UFD, or to a network share. Next, you will install Windows 7 and then migrate your files back from the removable media onto your computer. When you are finished, you must install your software programs again, but your files and settings will have been copied from Windows XP.

Copy files using Windows Easy Transfer
1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD while running Windows XP. If the Windows 7 installation window
opens automatically, close it.
2. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start menu, and then clicking Explore.
3. Browse to the DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exe in the Support\Migwiz
directory.
The Windows Easy Transfer window opens.
4. Click Next.
5. Select An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
6. Click This is my old computer. Windows Easy Transfer scans the computer.
7. Click Next. You can also determine which files should be migrated by selecting only the user
profiles you want to transfer, or by clicking Customize.
8. Enter a password to protect your Easy Transfer file, or leave the box blank, and then click Save.
9. Browse to the external location on the network or to the removable media where you want to
save your Easy Transfer file, and then click Save.
10. Click Next. Windows Easy Transfer displays the file name and location of the Easy Transfer file
you just created.

When you perform a custom installation of Windows 7, files that were used in the earlier version of Windows are stored in a Windows.old folder. The folders that are stored in the Windows.old folder contain some files that you used in the earlier version of Windows. The type of files that are stored depends on your computer. We recommend that you always back up any important files before you install a new operating system.

Windows 7 was designed to upgrade from Windows Vista and not from Windows XP. Additionally, Microsoft will only allow the following upgrade path to Vista users:
• Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
• Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
• Windows Vista Enterprise to Windows 7 Enterprise
• Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate
***Any other upgrade path from Vista to Windows 7 will require a clean install***
***Any upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 will require a clean install***
Before proceeding with an installation of Windows 7, you are strongly advised to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will check the compatibility of your computer with Windows 7 and alert you to any issues that you should address before installing Windows 7. The download is available

1. From the Microsoft website click on Download the Windows Upgrade Advisor Beta.
2. Click Download and then click Run.
3. A window will display that says “Do you want to run this software?” Click Run.
4. On the Setup Wizard screen, click Next.
5. Click I accept the license terms and click Next.
6. Click Install. When installation is complete, click Close.
7. When you see the screen below, click Start Check.
8. Windows Upgrade Advisor will start checking compatibility.
9. Once the scan is complete, Upgrade Advisor will display any issues that you should be aware of.
10. Click Close to exit Windows Upgrade Advisor

You will be unable to do an in-place upgrade in the following situations: 1. The current version installed on your computer is Windows XP. 2. The current version is Windows Vista which has not been updated to Service Pack 1 or later. 3. You are upgrading from a 32-bit version of Windows Vista to a 64-bit version of Windows 7, or a 64-bit version of Windows Vista to a 32-bit version of Windows 7. 4. If you are moving from Windows Vista in one language to Windows 7 in a different language. 5. If you are moving from a higher edition to a lower edition (e.g. going from Windows Vista Enterprise to Windows 7 Professional).

You can move your files manually or by using the Windows Easy Transfer tool that is included with Windows 7. Windows Easy Transfer guides you through saving your XP profiles, settings, and files (documents, pictures, music, etc) to an external device, such as an external hard drive, and then puts them back in place once the upgrade to Windows 7 is complete. Following are instructions on how to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 using the Windows Easy Transfer method. Make sure you have an external hard drive available on which to store the Windows Easy Transfer file that will be created.

If you’re new to Facebook, there’s no need to be intimidated. It won’t take long for you to get acquainted with one of the most popular online social networks around.

What exactly is Facebook? Facebook is a free online social networking tool that allows you to connect and interact with friends, family, and people who share your interests. Anyone over age 13 can sign up with a valid email address. How Do I Get Started? Signing up is quick and easy too. Provide your name, working email address, birthday and password and you’re set. Once you are connected, you will have the option of creating a personal profile. You can say as much or as little about yourself as you want. In fact, with Facebook privacy settings, you can customize how much of your information is available to your extended network.

What’s Next? Possibly the best feature of Facebook is the ability to connect and share. The short tutorial below will provide guideposts on how to start using Facebook tools to do just that. Once you begin to explore the site, you will also come across terms that you may not immediately understand. The glossary at the end of this turorial will help you to make sense of what we’ll affectionately call Facebook-isms. Facebook 101 Make Some Friends Once you’ve created your account on Facebook, take a moment to make some friends… or rather, find your friends who have profiles on Facebook. There are a four ways to do this: Select friends from your webmail address books. Select people you know from your Facebook network. Search for friends by name. Select friends from your instant messenger contact list. You can also invite friends who are not on Facebook to join. After all, the more the merrier!

Let Your Personality Show Display your interests, passions, and talents on your profile for your friends to see. Within your profile, you can post and share photos, videos, notes, and links to your favorite sites or blogs. You can also become a fan of Pages that you support and invite your friends to become fans. In fact, now is a great time to…. Become a Fan of Whirlpool Building Blocks Building Blocks, now in it’s third year, is a 5-day event where volunteers from all over the country come together to work side-by-side with qualified Habitat families to build a block full of homes, from the ground up. The Whirlpool Building Blocks page will act as a hub where volunteers, alumni and well-wishers can exchange stories, photos, and advice pertaining to the Building Blocks experience. As a fan of Whirlpool Building Blocks, you are invited to: Share the Building Blocks Page with others Upload Photos from previous builds Connect with and encourage other volunteers Share your thoughts and experiences on Discussion Threads.

Consumers are increasingly turning to the Internet for information about companies and products. According to Jupiter Research, 70% of viral marketers report increasing brand awareness as one of the most successful areas of their social marketing campaigns. With more than 70 million active users, Facebook is the Internet’s leading social utility. Facebook Pages give businesses the opportunity to build a consumer base, sell products, run promotions, schedule appointments or reservations, share information, and interact with customers.

Today, hundreds of thousands of leading brands, restaurants, hotels, writers, filmmakers, bands, and retailers are leveraging Facebook Pages to reach consumers. Businesses now have the ability to expand their revenue base and acquire new customers through free Facebook Pages. Pages enable customers to interact, learn, purchase, and spread the word about your business to their friends. The key is Facebook’s stable and trusted platform, which gives companies the ability to connect with consumers and participate in the conversations they’re already having with their friends about their favorite local spots, artists, films and brands. This regular interaction gives businesses the opportunity to connect with existing and new customers as effectively as a face-to-face meeting.

Facebook offers you an unparalleled opportunity to connect with your fans and consumers—on their turf and in ways they find meaningful. By maintaining a Facebook Page and using all the available features, you can interact with consumers the same way they interact with friends and colleagues. Your biggest fans have probably already told a couple friends about your business in casual conversation, but Facebook’s technology makes it easy for them to spread the word instantaneously to all of their friends.

Facebook and its outside developers have built thousands of free applications for businesses, bands, and every other type of organization. Your Page comes with the basics pre-installed, but you can easily add whichever other applications are right for your business. For instance, a restaurant may choose to add an application for online ordering or reservations, while a film may add a cinema-locator so the user can find the nearest screening without ever leaving Facebook. You can even build your own applications. The more useful your applications are to your customers, the faster your fan base will grow.

Facebook Ads allow you to reach exactly the audience you want and bring them to your Page. You can choose your audience based on age, gender, geography, educational status, relationship status, and precise interests or keywords. Your ads can be socialized so that users’ interactions are reflected in the ads their friends see, increasingly the virality of your Page. You can run ads both in traditional locations and in the News Feed. As with your Page itself, the key to success with Facebook Ads is to experiment and iterate on your work.

When you sign up as a user of Facebook, the default settings allow all other Facebook users to find you in searches. However, only those you have confirmed as friends or who share a network with you have access to your full profile. By default, your name and thumbnail profile picture can also be found on public search engines.

Facebook has selected these settings based on what it believes most users want, but you can always change them to restrict access to your information, as you see fit. Therefore, you can change the default settings to restrict access to your profile. Under the current setting, only your friends, their friends, and the people on your networks can see your profile. If you download Facebook Platform thirdparty applications into your profile, some of your information may be shared (see section on “Applications” below). It is important to explore these default settings, to adjust the privacy settings to those with which you are comfortable.

It’s easy to change the default settings. Once you sign in, click on “Settings” at the top of the screen toward the right, (just to the left of the Search bar), and then choose “Privacy Settings” from the drop-down menu. The Privacy menu has four categories in which you can determine the degree of privacy you would like. You can click on each heading to access the page on which you can make your changes. Privacy settings can be customized to exclude or include specific friends or lists of friends. Remember to click on “Save Changes” before exiting the page. (Note: Review your privacy settings if you change regional networks. The settings will change back to the default: all members of that network will be able to see your full profile. It is important to be aware of this, and adjust your privacy settings if this is not what you want. It is a wise practice to check your privacy settings whenever you add anything or make changes to your profile.)
