BlackBerry Hardening Guide

Although the RIM installation guides do not provide advice on the level of vendor security patching that should be applied to either the BES’s underlying operating system or the Microsoft Exchange server, best practice dictates that production servers should be installed with the most current vendor cumulative patches and security hot fixes. The default configuration for the BES, using a Microsoft Windows operating system, provides a Windows share of C:\ which is not required for BES functionality.

Installing the BES automatically creates a common network directory share for holding BlackBerry handheld software configuration files. These files are used to configure handhelds with the agency’s IT policy; unauthorised modification to the files could reduce the security of handhelds.

AOL Instant Messenger Service for BlackBerry Smartphones

You can use the AIM® service for BlackBerry® devices to chat with other AIM® service users from your BlackBerry device. To use the AIM service
for BlackBerry devices, you must have an AIM screen name.

The Buddy List® displays your list of individual contacts, or Buddies. The Buddy List groups Buddies automatically according to whether they
are using the AIM® service from a mobile device or a computer. The AIM® service for BlackBerry® devices uses your existing Buddy List from
your AIM service account.

You can associate a Buddy with a contact in your main contact list who has an email address, phone number, or both. You can then perform
actions such as call or send an email message to the Buddy quickly during a conversation. Your availability status is made up of a status message and an availability indicator. You can create a custom availability status by typing your
own status message and choosing an availability indicator. By default, the availability indicator appears as available.
